About Melanie
Hi there, my name is Melanie, and I’m from Papua New Guinea. In February 2023, I arrived in Darwin for the first time to commence my studies at Charles Darwin University (CDU), Casuarina Campus. I am also one of the recipients of the Australian Awards Scholarship. I choose CDU as my first preference because the university offers world-class education to international and domestic students. Besides studying, I also wanted to explore the spectacular places in the Top End.
In addition to my employment back home, I also participated in voluntary programs such as student engagement programs, community, and church voluntary programs. I like engaging in such voluntary activities because they enhance my skills and allow me to network with others. The program that I am currently studying at CDU is based on my passion for emergency and disaster management because it will enable me to work with vulnerable people in the communities.
Balancing study, work, and life could be a challenging task. But I am grateful that CDU offers student support services that help students to manage and cope with such situations. Similarly, there are many social groups available for students to join. Besides studying, we should develop other aspects of our lives, such as mental health, social and spiritual well-being.
Darwin is a beautiful place to study and have people from all across the world with diverse cultures. So my recommendations and favourite things to do here include a day trip to the Litchfield National Park, Darwin Sunset Cruise Tour, Jumping Crocodile Cruise, Mindil Beach Market held every April to October, and the Darwin Symphony Orchestra Concert. Coming to Darwin, you will enjoy your study and time.
