Hospitality Connect - jobs for international students

A partnership between StudyNT, Tourism NT and Hospitality NT, the first Hospitality Connect was held in Darwin’s CBD on 24 March 2021.

Work opportunities help to attract international students to study in the Northern Territory (NT). With COVID-19 travel restrictions impacting the local hospitality and tourism workforce, international students present a potential solution to fill urgent positions needed to maintain service standards during a promising tourism season ahead.

The event connected international students and graduates on a post-study working visa with hospitality and tourism sector employers looking to grow their teams.

International students attended a speed-interview formatted program with eight employers presenting more than 30 job vacancies from businesses including Ramada Suites Zen Quarter, Moorish Café, Dom’s Bar and Lounge, Little Miss Korea, The Tap on Mitchell, Wharf One, Pee Wee’s Restaurant and Litchfield Motel.

The program was enthusiastically received by both students and employers. An instant ‘match’ was made on the day with Ramada Suites Zen Quarter recruiting Lithuanian International College of Advanced Education student, Martynas Kareiva, to a night manager position. An additional five positions were filled in the two weeks following the event with more expected.

International students are a great asset to the Territory’s hospitality industry with many putting down roots in the NT and becoming contributing members of the community.

The success of the pilot program has fueled an appetite for all involved to host the event annually in the lead up to the tourism season in the Territory.
