‘Human services’ refers to government’s work in meeting human needs by delivering welfare, public aid, health and other services.
Roles in the human services sector include:
- social workers
- health educators
- occupational therapists
- probation officers
- rehabilitation workers.
The Northern Territory (NT) Government is developing a strategy for the human services sector. It will not only focus on providing services but on creating economic opportunities for communities in the NT and delivering quality services to achieve better outcomes for people across the NT.
Changing the way we deliver human services can create economic opportunities in regional and remote areas of the NT.
A greater focus on skilling local people to deliver human services will benefit workforce development, participation and engagement at the local level.
The opportunity for locals to deliver human services in their own community is far better than relying on a fly-in, fly-out (or drive-in, drive-out) workforce. It also ensures more money stays in communities.
A mobile specialist workforce will still be important, and these specialists will support a local workforce that recognises cultural sensitivities and customs.
The short-term catalyst for change will be the roll-out of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) across the NT, where there is a clear focus on providing opportunities for local service providers to deliver services.
The same focus can be extended to public service roles such as teachers, police officers, nurses, trainers, child and aged care workers, teachers’ aides and youth workers.
