The Northern Territory Government is proposing to facilitate the development and management by the private sector of new seniors’ lifestyle accommodation across the Darwin and Alice Springs regions.
The project represents an important element in the government’s vision and commitment of facilitating the retention and the transition of senior Territorians to retire in their community into appropriate accommodation with suitable support services.
The Northern Territory is experiencing an increase in the proportion of seniors. As this occurs, people are seeking specifically-designed housing options to live independently within a safe environment with access to care and community support as they age.
Through consultation as part of the Economic Summit process, Regional Economic Development Committees and previous studies, there is strong evidence in support of measures to attract private sector investment and enable additional age appropriate privately operated housing supply to be developed.
The Northern Territory Government engaged KPMG to undertake a market analysis. In its report, KPMG identified:
- a current statistical undersupply of senior accommodation
- a current statistical undersupply of aged care beds
- the preferred residential development type
- target market
- key stakeholder insights.
The government is considering the KPMG findings and the next steps to progress these important facilitated projects and investment opportunities in the Darwin, Darwin Rural and Alice Springs regions.
